Leash Walking for Beginners

Many people think that dogs just innately know how to walk politely on a leash. But this skill is something that needs to be trained. A few simple steps will ensure that your dood gets the exercise he needs and you both have an enjoyable walk!

Whether you have chosen a harness or collar, make sure your pup has been introduced to it in a relaxed environment. While wearing it, practice trained behavior - such as "sit" or "come" being sure to reward the behavior with praise and treats. Practice walking inside praising your pup as he follows your lead.

Taking it outside:

Start with short walks and lots of patience. There will be new challenges with this step because all the sounds, smells, and sights your puppy encounters will be intriguing. Use treats to regain his attention pausing to sit if necessary.

Keep the leash short so the pup stays by your side. Decide ahead of time on a command such as "wait" or "here" that reminds your dog to return to your side. AS SOON AS the leash becomes taunt due to his pulling, give the command you have decided upon and STOP. Stand still. Eventually, your pup will grow bored and sit or lay down at which point the leash will become loose. Reward him with praise and a treat, then continue walking. If he pulls again - stop and wait.

Repeat the process of stopping and waiting until your pup learns that the walk will only proceed if the leash is 'loose'.

Some pups are more persistent and instead of stopping, you may need to reverse directions. This puts you in the lead at all times. Eventually, your pup will learn his boundaries and return to your side each time you say the command making leash walking a pleasure. This training takes an enormous amount of patience, but will be WELL WORTH IT if you stick it out.
